Climate change is making rainfall increasingly unpredictable across many parts of Kenya. Communities are experiencing prolonged dry periods, while heavy rainfall sometimes arrives within a short period and quickly disappears as surface runoff.
Rainwater harvesting provides a practical way for households, schools, farms, and community institutions to collect and store water when rain is available. When properly designed and managed, these systems can improve water security, strengthen livelihoods, and help communities prepare for drought.

Improving Access to Water
In areas with limited access to rivers, boreholes, or piped water, families may travel long distances to collect water. This responsibility often falls on women and children, reducing the time available for education, work, and other important activities.
Rooftop rainwater harvesting allows water to be collected through gutters and directed into a covered storage tank. The water can then be used for cleaning, washing, livestock, irrigation, and other household needs.
When rainwater is intended for drinking or cooking, appropriate treatment and regular water-quality monitoring are necessary.
Supporting Food and Nutrition Security
Reliable access to water helps families establish and maintain kitchen gardens. Stored rainwater can be used to grow vegetables such as kale, tomatoes, spinach, and indigenous crops, particularly when rainfall becomes irregular.
Families can improve water efficiency by combining rainwater harvesting with practices such as drip irrigation, mulching, composting, and planting drought-tolerant crops.
Kitchen gardens provide nutritious food for households and may also create opportunities to generate income by selling surplus produce within the community.
Preparing Communities for Drought
Rainwater harvesting cannot prevent drought, but it can reduce its effects by ensuring that some water is stored during rainy periods.
Different communities require different solutions. Available options include rooftop collection systems, community water tanks, farm ponds, rock catchments, and sand dams. The right solution depends on local rainfall patterns, land conditions, available resources, and the intended use of the water.
Planning before the dry season gives households and communities a better chance of protecting their health, crops, livestock, and livelihoods.
Protecting Health and the Environment
Rainwater systems must be properly maintained to keep the collected water safe. Roofs and gutters should be cleaned regularly, storage tanks should remain covered, and first-flush devices should be used to divert the initial runoff containing dust and other contaminants.
Collecting rainwater also reduces uncontrolled surface runoff. This can help limit soil erosion, protect productive land, and reduce pressure on rivers, boreholes, and other natural water sources.
Community Participation Creates Lasting Change
Successful water projects involve more than installing tanks and gutters. Community members should participate in identifying their needs, selecting suitable solutions, and deciding how the systems will be maintained.
Local training is equally important. When residents understand how to inspect gutters, clean tanks, identify damage, and carry out basic repairs, the system is more likely to provide long-term benefits.
Partnerships between communities, civil society organizations, government institutions, and development partners can expand these solutions and ensure that they respond to local priorities.
