Climate-smart farming provides practical methods that can help farmers respond to these changing conditions. It focuses on producing food sustainably, adapting to climate risks, and protecting the natural resources upon which agriculture depends.

Choosing Resilient Crops
Planting crops that are suitable for local climate conditions is an important part of climate-smart farming.
Drought-tolerant crops such as sorghum, millet, cowpeas, pigeon peas, and green grams can survive with less water than some commonly grown crops. Indigenous vegetables may also tolerate difficult conditions while providing important nutrients.
Crop diversification reduces the risk of relying on a single harvest. When farmers grow several types of crops, poor performance in one crop may be balanced by better results from another.
Protecting Soil and Conserving Water
Healthy soil stores water, supports plant growth, and helps farms remain productive. However, exposed soil can lose moisture quickly and may be washed away by heavy rainfall.
Mulching is one effective way of protecting the soil. Farmers place crop residue, dry grass, or other organic material around plants. This covering reduces evaporation, limits weed growth, and gradually adds organic matter to the soil.

Farmers can also collect rainwater from rooftops and surface runoff and store it in tanks, ponds, or other suitable structures. When combined with mulching and proper irrigation, stored water can support crops during short dry periods.
Integrating Trees and Crops
Agroforestry involves growing trees alongside crops or livestock. Carefully selected trees can provide fruit, animal feed, fuel, shade, and additional household income.
Their roots help hold the soil together, while fallen leaves contribute organic matter. Some tree species can also improve soil fertility and protect crops from strong winds.
Farmers should choose tree species that are appropriate for the local environment and position them carefully to avoid excessive competition with crops for sunlight and water.
Knowledge Strengthens Communities
Climate-smart agriculture works best when farmers have access to practical information and can learn from one another.
Demonstration farms, farmer field schools, community training sessions, and local agricultural extension services allow farmers to test new practices before adopting them on a larger scale.
Farmers also possess valuable knowledge developed through years of experience. Combining this local understanding with weather information, appropriate technology, and scientific guidance can produce solutions that respond to the community’s actual needs.
Supporting Livelihoods and Food Security
Climate-smart farming is not based on one method that works everywhere. Every community has different soils, rainfall patterns, crops, resources, and priorities.
The most effective solutions are therefore developed with farmers rather than imposed upon them. When communities participate in planning and decision-making, they are more likely to adopt and maintain farming practices that improve their lives.
